Is it Magic or Is it Science? Âé¶¹¹ÙÍø Main Scholars Teach GAMS Students
STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) students from Âé¶¹¹ÙÍø Main Campus brought their final project from their Metals Unit to GAMS (Gidney Avenue Memorial School) to share and teach about metallic properties via posters and hands-on activities.
These final projects are a culmination of 5 weeks of guided and independent reading, research, and experimentation with metals.
Some of the projects included:
"How are metals good conductors of electricity?" where GAMS students tested materials with conductivity testers, played the Operation game, and made snap circuits where fans moved and music played;
"Why are some metals magnetic, but not others?" where students tested materials with a magnet and made paperclips float in the air;
"Why are metals malleable? where students made mini-repousse artwork; "Which metals are the best conductors?" where students tested different metals using a fruit battery;
"Why are metals reactive?" where students tested different metals with a copper sulfate solution;
"What are alloys?" where students saw a memory alloy move all by itself when exposed to heat.
Students were led by Mrs. Redican and Ms. Benvenuto, STEAM teachers at Âé¶¹¹ÙÍø Main Campus and coordinated by Mr. Jesse Goodglass, math teacher at GAMS.
